HOW TO PREPARE FOR A HOME REMODELING PROJECT

Budget:  Set a desired and realistic budget.  Determine what your maximum spend amount is, and then deduct 20% from that to be able to handle unforeseen existing conditions.

Build a detailed plan:  If you are considering a home remodeling project, you have likely already spent a fair amount of time dreaming about it.  Spend some time thinking about what’s working in the space and what isn’t. Consider how you and your family like to spend time in that space and how you would want it ultimately to be.  What is your aesthetic for style and colors?  Do you want the space to be exciting, or are you looking for a more soothing vibe? Start saving photos and clippings of ideas you like and other designs you see that appeal to you.

Hire a contractor:  This can be a daunting step, especially if this is your first time to embark on a job big enough to require a contractor.  Ask your friends for referrals, and do online searches.  Read reviews, and when you find a possible person for the job, study their portfolio carefully to  ensure they have plenty of experience.  Ask them if they have the proper licensed insurance, and check around to determine if they have a good reputation.

Set a timeline and make a detailed plan:  Now that you have hired your contractor, it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty.  Work up a timeline with them, and let them help you make a detailed plan of exactly what work will be done.

Plan for problems:  The more planning you do, the less unanticipated problems you should encounter in your remodel.  But it’s almost impossible to predict everything, as once you take down walls and pull up floors, you can discover new things that need to be fixed.  Setting aside 20% of your budget for unforeseen conditions is a good way to mitigate unexpected issues.  It’s always best to be ready for a few surprises, and if you don’t have any, that’s fantastic!

Prepare for your renovation:  Get yourself and your family into the proper mindset about the coming work to be done.  It’s going to be very exciting, but also messy and sometimes chaotic.  Go with the flow and have fun with the process.  There will be a lot of dust, so remove as much as you can to protect your furniture and items.  If you hire a conscientious contractor, they will  be very mindful that this is your home and will clean up after themselves at the end of each day.

Enjoy your new home:  The remodeling process can be challenging, but the reward at the end is so worth it!  Now you have your dream come true and can begin to love the place you call home!
