SOME COMMONSENSE TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAINT COLOR
We’ve all experienced the hassle of thinking we have the right paint color for our living room walls, only to find, after getting most of the walls done, that it looks terrible.
Here are some useful tips that will help you avoid that frustration. These suggestions will make it easier for you to come up with the exact right color and hue that will look beautiful on your walls, transforming your room in the way you imagined.
Take into consideration how the room will be used; what is its function: Forexample, you probably want your bedroom to feel relaxed and restful. Cooler colors, like lavender, pale blues and greens are generally more soothing. If you prefer warmer colors, muted tones, like pale yellow or pink with a gray undertone, could be lovely.
Most people prefer a more stimulating pallet for their kitchen or dining room, as long as very bright colors are used judiciously so as not to be overwhelming. Greens and blues can also create a serene kitchen where families often spend a lot of their time. White in a room can also be a great choice, and understanding the undertones of white will help steer you in the many choices of “white”.
Cool whites have a green, blue or gray undertone; while warmer whites have an undertone of yellow, rust or muted brown. White is a great choice for a ceiling, as it reflects light well and helps the room feel more spacious. It also is wonderful for trim and moldings, offering a fun contrast to the color of the walls.
Don’t choose your paint color first: Before you decide on the paint color, have
your décor, rug, furniture, even paintings. These pieces can be the inspiration for
your wall color. Even a beloved heirloom can be the guide for your color choice.
Never choose paint color in the store. You can purchase small samples and paint a few poster boards with your colors. Place these on the walls, and over the next few days, move them around, seeing them throughout the different times of the day and evening. It can be very surprising how much the natural light, as it changes throughout the day, affects the color.
Also keep in mind that lighter wall colors generally make a room feel more open, while darker colors will create a closer feeling. While it’s very tempting to paint a room over a weekend, slowing down a little and following these guidelines will ensure you end up falling in love with your transformed room!
